Diabetes Awareness Month

November is Diabetes Awareness Month and November 14th is World Diabetes Day which marks the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting who discovered insulin 91 years ago.

Today, more than 9 million Canadians live with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes.  This means that nearly 1 in 4 Canadians has diabetes.  More than 20 people are diagnosed with the disease every hour of every day.

My nephew Brian was diagnosed with Type 1 Juvenile Diabetes at the tender age of 14 months.  In his honour his mother Joyce and I participated with Team Diabetes Canada in the 2006 Honolulu Marathon walking 42km and raising over $13,000 for the Canadian Diabetes Association.

Brian has been waiting anxiously for his 16th birthday so he would be eligible to become a member of Team Diabetes.  He will turn 16 in 2013 and has asked his mother and I to join him in the fight against diabetes by participating in the 2013 Amsterdam Marathon.

In order for me to participate with Team Diabetes I have to raise a minimum of $6,100.  I will make a personal donation of $2,100 to cover my trip expenses and am asking for your help to raise the remaining $4,000.

One of the greatest contributions of the Canadian Diabetes Association is toward outstanding Canadian research.  But that is not all the Association does - it runs camps for young people with diabetes and provides education and special services to people affected by diabetes in communities across Canada.  Brian has been going to Camp Diabetes for many years and it has been an amazing experience for him and I am proud to say that next year he will be a camp counsellor sharing his experience and helping kids to learn to live with diabetes.
Please celebrate Canada's gift of insulin to the world and support my efforts by going online and making a donation today.

Brian, Joyce and I have accepted this challenge because we believe that the money raised will help in the fight against diabetes.  I hope you will help us with this fight. Your support is needed to combat this serious life-threatening disease.

Words of Wisdom

"We are driven by self-interest, it’s necessary to survive. But we need wise self-interest that is generous and co-operative, taking others’ interests into account. Co-operation comes from friendship, friendship comes from trust, and trust comes from kind-heartedness. Once you have a genuine sense of concern for others, there’s no room for cheating, bullying or exploitation."

That was an amazing journey! I am thrilled to be participating once again with Team Diabetes in the
2013 Amsterdam Marathon.

This time not only with my sister Joyce but also with my
16 year old nephew Brian who was diagnosed with
Type 1 Juvenile diabetes when he was just over 1 year of age.
Together we have committed to raising $18,000 for the
Canadian Diabetes Association
